Abstract

The construction of defense policies by the United States in the aftermath of September 11, 2001 has changed the way the world handles international security issues. Thus, this paper aims to present the history, motivations and factors that influenced the privatization of the use of violence, identifying the favorable characteristics of private military companies, as well as the problems that may arise from the excessive use of them by States, in the post-9/11 context. The scope of the work is to analyze the rise of the use of Private Military Companies in the War on Terror, more specifically in the Iraq War.
