Title: A history of gun ownership in America: is gun control enough to decrease violent deaths in the world’s largest economy
Author(s): Gonçalves, Gabriel Alves
First Advisor: Klein, Christian Philip
Summary: This paper aims at uncovering a basic question: is gun control sufficient to prevent violent deaths in the United States of America and other developed countries? In order to respond to that question, the study was divided into three segments. In the first section of the text, the author describes the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, in the way it is dubiously written, and explores somewhat briefly about the History of the US Supreme Court when it comes to upholding local and Federal Legislation where gun control in concerned, as well as other mechanisms like the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Brady Campaign, opposing powers in the struggle against the right to bear arms. Finally, there is a portion dedicated to an overview of violent deaths related to firearm injuries across the country. The second and third segments of this text aim at exposing the different local and Federal Legislations that divide California and Texas, both used as study cases for this paper. Conclusively, the author also draws a comparison between the socioeconomic indexes of both states. The subsequent study concludes that, while gun control is not sufficient in terminating violent killings in America, California is miles ahead of Texas when it comes to social development and stricter gun control laws, which makes it a safer place to live. The study also found a correlation between violent deaths and race, a matter that has been a part of US History for centuries.
