Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of Lampião’s image in journalism and popular culture, investigating how a historical figure associated with massacres in Brazil was reinterpreted as a hero. The research explores the media construction of Lampião, examining whether journalism contributed to his vilification or heroification. Through the analysis of news reports and cultural works, the study seeks to understand the nuances of this reinterpretation, considering the social and political context of the time. It addresses the influence of cangaço on Northeastern identity and the complexity of Lampião’s figure as both a symbol of resistance and violence. The critical analysis of journalistic and cultural narratives aims to deconstruct stereotypes and promote reflection on the memory and history of cangaço in Brazil. This work contributes to the debate on the construction of heroes and villains in Brazilian society, offering a new perspective on Lampião’s trajectory.
