Uma reflexão sobre a sexualidade nos versos de Walt Whitman

Abstract

The transcendentalist period is described mainly by the connection between the man (self) and the nature that surrounds us. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau started one of the largest and most contributory literary school in the nineteenth century: the Transcendentalism. Through this, Walt Whitman started to show his free and detailed verses, instituting the teachings that seemed to have been drawn directly from Emerson’s directions. The body, mind and and self-control were celebrated so we could see ourselves in his poems. The sexuality manifests itself in its smallest details and compress large meanins into small symbols that can be found frequently. The sexual bias of his work shows the will of the poet to include themes that seem quite absurd, but with the most inherent characteristics to our naturalness. Homosexuality shows itself among its leaves of grass and can be considered one of the most extensive possibilities of study on the subject. This work prompts and lectures on the interpretations of some of Whitman’s poems and seeks to contribute with reflections about his freedom in literary writing.
